On August 24, 2018, Golden Gate University School of Law will host the first annual Golden Griffin Challenge, an intraschool mock trial competition to crown the top two fake lawyers of the GGU student body and determine who makes the 2018/2019 National Trial Team at GGU.
You may also sign up to compete in the Golden Griffin Challenge even if you do not plan to do mock trial. The only prerequisite for competing under those circumstances is Evidence.
In order to be eligible for a spot on the National Trial Team you must have completed Evidence with a grade of C+ or better and have either completed Trial Advocacy with a grade of C+ or better or be con-currently enrolled in Trial Advocacy while doing mock trial.
The competition will feature upper-division students vying for the title of top fake lawyer and the prestigious honor of receiving the Golden Griffy. The competition will feature two rounds, a preliminary round starting at 9 a.m. and a final round beginning at 1 p.m.
Students may sign up below. As a team, competitors will prepare a cross examination and a closing argument. Students will have the opportunity to choose which side of the case they will try when they sign up for the competition.
During the preliminary round one student will conduct a cross examination and the other will give the closing argument. If a team advances to the final round then the advocates will switch roles for the final round.
Teams will try their case ex parte (there will be no opposing counsel in the room during either the cross or the closing). However, advocates must still adhere to the Federal Rules of Evidence, the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, and the American Bar Association Model Rules of Professional Conduct.
The deadline to sign up is Friday, August 10 by 5 p.m.
